We had margaritas, beer, soft drinks free with delicious Mexican food. Good times!

While I think these events are great, I think they miss one big thing: direct comparisons to other makes and models. It caters to existing owners in the markets they do it at, but not to everyone and that makes choosing one tough.

I went to the Minneapolis cycle show last weekend with my wife and father looking around and neither Triumph, KTM or Ducati were there so while looking at possible new bikes and being able to directly walk from one to the other to sit, touch and feel we couldn’t put any of them into an even playing field. I knew they wouldn’t be there so we ended up at a local dealer before the show and while it helped, I gotta say that the Yamaha Tracer GT and Kawasaki Versys SE will probably be the top contenders for the next bike because it was easy to play around with them and my wife could feel the small differences being able to hop back and forth. By the end of the day sitting on bikes she couldn’t remember how the Multi felt 6 hours earlier.

There was a cool vintage Ducati scooter there in the vintage area, never seen one before.

I agree that it's great for consumers to be able to compare different brands without going to five dealerships and having salespeople right over your shoulder; however, the manufacturers like potential buyers looking at just their machines. This is a trend started by the auto manufacturers and is being copied by the motorcycle guys.

Yup, I get it, Triumph has moved to that as well. I just think it’s a short sighted idea and I don’t have to like it. If you have a product you believe in enough to produce, you should welcome people looking elsewhere because if yours is actually better, they’ll come back. I did for all 3 of my current rides.

Catering to your existing customers only gets you so far, ask Harley Davidson how well that’s going for them lately......

Hey, I'm with you on this, but the manufacturers didn't ask for my opinion.

At Pensacola event, the other brands (Indian, Suzuki, BMW, Slingshots) were still in showroom, but were pushed around to allow the Ducks to be together. So comparison was something that could be done.

As long as your dealer carries all the brands and models with them in stock that you are looking at, yeah, you can compare. Unfortunately in my area none carry everything and Ducati dealers are getting few and far between.

Know I get it, I am asking a lot, but I think it is in their best interest to go to these community events and not skip them in favor of "personal" ones only.
