Magnetic Tank Bag Question

I'd prefer to get a magnetic tank bag for my SS. I use one and move it from my Suzuki Bandit and Moto Guzzi California. It works fine on the 'zuk but over time has caused minor scuffing on the Guzzi.

So before I use this bag or purchase a new one, I'd like to know if anyone here has experience with magnetic tank bags on the SS? If so, did the paint hold up or did the bag leave scratches and scuffs?

I’m using a very old but large Cortech magnetic tank bag with no scratch problems (that I’ve noticed), but I’d still proceed with caution.

We have the large DP magnetic tank bags on both our SSS. I clean and wax the tank regularly plus am careful to keep the contact surfaces on the bag clean. So far, so good.

Weíve used magnetic, strap on and snap on contact free bags over the years. Each has pros & cons.

On the mag-bag, they are easy to attach/detach but must be kept clean.

The snap on, no contact bags donít touch the tank but can be a real PITA to attach/detach. Several times with the Bags Connection snap on bag, the pull cord on spring loaded release came loose and/or fell off, which made removing the bag at a gas station in the middle of BFE a difficult and frustrating task.

IMHO, there is no clear ďwinnerĒ so choose the one you like and manage the ďconsĒ.

Beware using a magnetic tank bag. The magnets can attract all sorts of swarf that will mark the tank. On the few occasions that I have used a magnetic tank bag I have put a layer of non-slip rubber matting under it.

I tried a Cortech magnetic mount and a Nelson Rigg strap bag and neither really fit the same of the tank very well and the magnetic one did start to put fine scratches in the tank in a few places.

I went with an SW Motech Bags Connection City gas cap ring unit and love it, so much so I replaced the one on my Triumph with a larger Bags Connection one, can't remember the model. Like them both a lot, though I don't have huge miles on either, under 1,000 on each, so maybe they eventually will be problematic. But for now, I am a fan.

As I said earlier in another post, Ducati paint seems to scratch easily. User beware.

I bought this one, instead. They have larger sizes, too. Great product.

7, I looked at those SW W/flange online, no map pocket. But I appreciate your thoughts on magnetic bags. I was thinking about giving my old 20 year Tourmaster a whirl and see how it does.

They do have one, it’s a $35 add on as well as a GPS mount that's an add on.

I swap mine between the two bikes; you can see it in this pic, it’s huge which is awesome for us old guys who can’t see small maps.

You're in WI? You might consider to ride down to the Ozark Raid in Harrison Ark (May-Jun) ? (see the thread)
