Tap on Top of Helmet

64 F, sunny, mid January... unusual, but nice.

Today I signaled some riders coming in my opposing direction with a few taps on the top of my helmet... and again, am surprised that they didn’t seem to know what I was signaling...

I've only heard that it means police ahead, but never actually seen anyone do it...

So, lemme get this straight.

I twist this little tube, it gets loud, I go forward really fast and it makes me smile...is that how it all works?

Do it quite a bit out here in Cali. Nice to know that LEO is in the area.

I used to do the head tap, but when riding in states without a helmet law the rider I'm signaling tends to get defensive if he's not wearing a lid. I now just flash my lights as an all purpose "watch out ahead".

I do the head tap....and always get what seems to be a thank you wave back if not on a 3g corner and even then I get a nod

Just a courtesy to fellow riders. I appreciate it (a lot!), when someone signals me as to what’s up ahead, and I try to do the same.

How do I know, “they don’t know”...well, I don’t for sure know they didn’t get it. But it seems to me, that when they understand what I’m signaling, they reply in some unique manner acknowledging they get it.

As examples, when someone warns me, I try to signal my appreciation back to them with something more distinctive than a simple hand wave, like an “ok”, or “thumbs up”.

Interesting point about states not requiring helmets...I can see how the tap could be easily misunderstood then.
