Rosso III

Three articles on the Rosso III, pretty consistent conclusion: good aggressive street tire, track use is pushing their use a bit, though.

These articles by Motorcylist and SportRider, but similar views also by some CW riders in other publications.

The bikes used in the testing above were a lot more powerful than the SS, but still, it's mainly a street tire for occasional track use, and I'm very satisfied with what seems like good fit for the bike.

Will be very interested to see how long these last.

Agreed. I'm really liking these tires, so far. I'm most curious about longevity, though. I got only 3,200 miles on the II's that were on the Hyper. Now, for a true sport tire, that would have been great, but I expected a little more (maybe 800-1,000) for a mostly street tire. Let's see how these turn out.

Pirelli has been on a roll building really good tires. I have Angel GTs and Night Dragons on my other bikes, all working great. The DR3s are working well on the fast canyon rides. It's a bonus they came as oem on the SS.

Agree. Looking at my current wear pattern, I think will get significantly more than 3000...

However, even though almost all my riding so far has been back roads, I'm starting to see the beginning of a flat spot already. Was hoping the harder center compound would have controlled that a bit better.

I read an article that criticised the rosso III's on the track, rider was on an aprilia tuono. Must say I was quite surprised but there are more factors than the tyre alone. Hence why there are other compounds available for track days. On the track I felt stable but also my SS doesn't have the torque of the tyre shredding tuono. Oh well, I still think it's a great tyre for the road. BTW it's a sport touring tyre and not a sports tyre so the author should take cognisance of that. It's like stating the rosso III was not good on the dirt....duh. Or using the supercorsa for touring...duh. Everything has a purpose so writing outside of its purpose is pretty stupid anyway. Thumbs down to the author of the article I read.
Phew I am on a ranting campaign lately.

At 600 miles the rear on my bike was down to 5.9mm tread at the centre. I happen to have a new unused Rosso III in the garage and the unworn depth at the same point is 7.00mm. So that's a wear rate of 1.10mm in 600 miles while taking it pretty easy during the run in.
Assuming the tyre should be changed at 2.00mm tread left then it will be pretty well worn out at 3,000 miles.
For comparison; my Scrambler has Avon Storm 3D X-M tyres fitted. At 3,000 miles it still has 5.00mm of tread left. The Avon is of course more of a touring tyre so not the best comparison but that is a huge difference in the wear rates.
I ran my MTS1200 with Michelin Pilot Roads and could see 7,500 miles from a rear tyre so I may go to them on the SS in the future.

I don't consider the Rosso 111 to be a sports touring tyre there are so many better suited for that purpose. To me it is a pure street Sport tyre with ability to use on the track. I know you will get 8000 km out of these tyres as a bunch of us on various 1000cc bikes have been using over the last 18 months great tyre very acceptable ware for the grip it gives

I know that YMMV with any tire, but what is the recommended spec for the mileage on the Rosso III's? 3000 miles is not very much

Thanks for posting the calculation!

Have also been very satisfied with many sets of PR2s and PR3s on my K12. With 170 hp and 530 lb bike, I used to burn up Sport tires very quickly in back roads, and found the PRs to have amazing longevity, warm up quicker than, and in some cases even have more stick than Sport tires. Not sure they would handle as well as the Rosso III, but perhaps not a significant enough of a difference given the increased longevity.
