2 Weeks on the road.

Brenda & I recently finished a 2 week ride on our 2 Red SSS through Colorado, Wyoming and Utah totaling about 4000 miles (including the 1060 miles to traverse the Oklahoma panhandle to & from Raton, NM). The bikes exceeded expectations in the "sport" environment of the mountains and twisties while proving to be competent on the high speed stretches of the long infinity roads of Western Oklahoma and Southern Wyoming.

The Ducati Panniers with liners by Amanda, DP Tail and Tank Bags provided adequate capacity. The expansion capability of the Panniers and liners came in handy for the inevitable t-shirts and "stuff" purchased on the road. We only encountered rain for about an hours' riding. The rain covers that came with the tank and tail bags worked well while the trash bags over the bag liners kept everything dry.
Since we use GoreTex riding gear, we did not have to carry rain suits, which freed up a lot of space.

We stopped about every 120 miles which worked well. The most fuel I put in was about 2.5 gal. resulting in mileage of about 45 mpg, which I thought was quite good.

We have done 2 week rides since 2004 on various sport touring bikes (Ducati ST3, ST4 & Multistrada and BMW R1100s). This was our first opportunity to ride the SSS on a long trip and overall, we both find these bikes to be on the sporty end of Sport Touring category, but nonetheless, competent in the touring end. The fun factor on these bikes is great, which is really what owning a motorcycle is all about for us.

Thats great! Got any pics from the trip?

As for the touring abilities of the SS, I agree, its really quite capable. Definitely a smart choice that you each have your own bike though. Passenger comfort is passable but not nearly as good as driver comfort. Longest trip Ive done when riding 2 up was a couple of hours and that was pushing it.

Thank you for sharing, sounds like an awesome trip! Wish my wife rode a bike, but maybe she will eventually 😉

Did I notice Angel GT tires on the back of one SS? I wish my wife would ride an SS. She stays home and worries when I ride. I rode up to Montana in August from Las Vegas. It is great to ride out West. I am riding to Big Bend, TX in October to meet up with some Houston Ducati club members.

While I am not a fan of the tail bag I am interested in more infos regarding the tank bag. I use the kriega sytem on all my bikes but found the sidestraps not ideal for the combination tank form and fairing on the SS.
Did you encounter any issues regarding scratching/abrasion for your dp tank bag? Any other down sides? Frankly speaking I never used megnetic bags before.

@rapete If you put Xpel on the tank, using a tank bag will prevent scratches.
