Try to check the clean and check for adjustment every 500-1500 miles, depending on how dirty your bike is and whether you garage it. Clean and adjusted chain is important.

The whole idea is to live and learn. A dumb guy doesn't learn from his mistake, a smart guy does, a even smarter guy learns from others' mistakes.
My guess is that you'll need a chain and sprockets before long. But I've also said that riders have ruined more chains from over maintenance than lack of. My meaning was that folks adjust the chain too often and over tighten it. So since you didn't do that, you may put my theory to test. In fact over 8k miles, I've only adjusted my chain a couple of time. I've cleaned it many more times, however.

It was a slow process and I had a holiday in italy and spain for a month in between. I found it difficult to depress the closer rockers so made a tool and while I was at it made a tool to seat the closer shims.
I only have a lathe to make the seating tool so the milling on the lathe is a bit average and being chrome moly the steel is on the hard side to machine.
The timing is so easy on our motors because the end of the cams have an upside down "T" slot all 4 cams at the same orientation when the horizontal cylinder is tdc on compression no need to mark belts with dots or count teeth.
The engine is quieter than before when it had huge opening rocker clearance.
