You singlehandedly killed my 14t sprocket plans for me.
My bad mileage is 45 mpg and best I've gotten over a full tank was 52. Low 41 or worse is just unacceptable for me.
Not because of the cost, but because I just hate to have to stop for fuel.
I like to get off and stretch when I ride so the distance isn't that bad for me. OTOH, I hate slow motorcycles. Although the few gas stops I rode with the old sprocket, I never got 45.

Anyway. that's what the forum is for. Since I ride with someone with an FJR, I thought I'd explain that. But given his bathroom breaks, the extra stop didn't really change his riding style. ;)

Just one more thing, I've personally never achieved the gas mileage for any of my bikes compared to what other people have said got for theirs on a forum. And I tend to coast in neutral once I've downshifted to a stop.

Your only talking about 15 minutes longer on the bike for stopping for fuel.
I've been getting lees than 20 mpg doing track days on the Ducati SS

So - I am getting serious about buying a SS - S and found one down south that has the luggage and low miles. I have run longer in fewer days, but on an FJR. As a 6ft tall guy, how reasonable is doing 1600 freeway miles in 2-3 days on a SS? This would be a fly and ride, also have the additional issue of midwest spring weather being a bit unpredictable. Don't care about the temps, snow/ice is a bigger issue on a bike that does not have the proper tires for that sort of mess.
I would consider shipping it, mainly because of the time of year. I don't want to be a bummer, as I've done both on numerous occasions and for those times I've flown to pick up a bike, I made sure to find a route back that afforded the most fun. Slabbing on any bike sucks, maybe okay on a Wing, but I hope to never find out ;-)

I live in the Carolinas and sold a BMW K1300s a number of years ago to a guy from Houston. He took 10 days to get back and found damn near every twistie on the way down!

Save the wear and tear and be closer to home when you start riding in the remote case there is an issue with it.

At this point, that bike is sold. But I have 2 rules on bikes. No shipping and no trailering unless I am buying a project.

Did take my first ride of the year yesterday on the fz1.

FWIW, last year I did 2700 miles in 4 days to forge a knife in PA - and that included a 5 hour forging session followed by 5 hours of Oktoberfest and then the local hotel. Then there is the whole story about the transvestite that wanted to talk in the bar after a 14 hour day the next day. Riding is for fun, and honestly if you can't ride it for long distances then I am not all that interested. You can ride anything at the track.

There are reasons to trailer a bike, even a Harley to Sturgis.
We live in California. A few years ago one of my close friends was diagnosed with cancer. His last request was to ride down Main Street during the Sturgis Rally one last time. About a dozen of us rode our bikes from here and took him in a RV to Sturgis with his bike on a trailer. Got there and let him ride down Main Street with us one last time. He died in the RV on the way home.
I've never questioned what a real biker is, even if they choose to use a trailer. For that matter I always trailer my bikes to track days because they aren't set up to ride anymore on the street.
RIP John

Fair enough. Pretty sure I said that was my rule - other folks can do whatever they want.

I know what you mean, I had those rules for a long time myself. Included trikes too. Then when somebody called me a Hard Ass instead of an Iron Butt rider when I did a 10/10th I got to thinking things over. LOL

In any event, going to look at a new V100 in a bit and see if that tickles me. If not then all of the SS are either south or east a bit. Only issue I have with the V100 is it has to be new at around 18.5K out the door and I can pick up barely used SS / SSS for 10-12

Cross shopping the SS and V100?

there's about 80 lbs of comfort and agility between them.

What? 15k on a dry chain?
The Regina chain which comes standard on the SS is completely shot now after 11k miles, despite lubing it every 2-300 miles

Yup, just the gold DID o-ring chains. Pretty common at least on fz1 to just wipe the dirt off. But what I am hearing is that I need to bring some lube and replace the chain when I get bike home.
