Coolant freezes at -4 deg F ??

Am I reading page 262 of the manual incorrectly?? Does it say that the coolant we have freezes at -4? We hit in the -20 range every year in my area:|....which has my garage at about -8 or so. :surprise:

I guess I have to burn torches in the garage all winter long :nerd:

Or bring your baby inside next to a roaring fireplace.
Got to love this forum. a few weeks ago the concerns from the northern hemisphere was heat shields and engine temperatures over heating and frying your eggs, now the concern is the freezing threshold of the anti freeze.

This type of mixture ensures the best operating conditions (the coolant starts to freeze at -4 °F/-20 °C). Cooling circuit capacity: 0.61 gallons (2.3 liters).
Direct quote from the manual, unless you live at one of the poles I think you should be ok. With your garage getting to -8 and the coolant starting to freeze at -20 Celsius, I very much doubt you get to -20 Fahrenheit.
There are different quality of coolants. Some are diluted and some not. Try motocool since that and the manual state undiluted coolant. It's threshold is -40c freezing point. I have been in -48C and it was very unpleasant, I certainly would not be riding my SS in that weather.

Was my first ever winter in europe. On the last train and some chap jumped of a bridge and got shredded by the train and I had to walk home for 10 miles. Thought i was going to die that morning. That's when I realised, with all its problems South Africa is a great place.

Reminds me I was stranded for 3 days in Moscow once and they had a Siberian freeze about -40c something. No flights going anywhere walked past a Russian soldier on guard in a post cut out of the snow I swear he was frozen solid he had icicles hanging off his eyelids. Caught a flight to India then on to South Africa as I don't think I was going to last another day

Be sure to position them in a way that makes the SS look majestic.

The coldest I've ever ridden my Monster is 26F/-3C, which is about the coldest it ever gets in NOLA. I have a suit that made it very comfortable, but I had regular gloves at the time. I warmed my hands at the rear header at every red light.

You guys are nuts...no riding past 40F for me. Takes all the fun outta riding.

The -8 for my garage is a guess. Never actually measured it. The first year we moved here (Idaho) from Las Vegas we had -28 F (outside). Certainly cooler than Vegas and a bit more chilly than it was on the Island in the East China Sea where we lived before that :) Usually about 0 to 5 degrees F or so most nights in the winter, but we do get plenty of nights in the neg teens. One or two cars are in the garage but we always have one or two outside. Never had any coolant freeze up on any of them. but....not running the pink stuff in the radiators either.

ya, its definitely bitter cold here. But....sure makes the snowboarding better than where you blokes live :)

Was it uphill? only one way? pffft.

-40 absolutely sucks, i sold a beautiful house and left a good job to escape it.

I used to mess around with snowmobiles alot, easily the most fun powersport. Anyway, we went out one day, -10f or so, i did pretty well, heated handgrips and all, balaklava under the helmet. weird thing was, the way the wind funneled down through my jacket, i ended up getting frost-bite at the base of my neck. It kind of itched when i got home, woke up the next day with a dark red stripe below my adam's apple.

ha ha....yes, different story when in the mountains on the snowboard. colder indeed :) But the concern now is ruining a wonderful, 11 deg testastretta someday when we get one of those <-20 degree cold snaps ;) that we get every year. that would definitely be a bad day.

Yikes.

I outdoor store my bikes. That means my SuperSport will see -25F and below this winter.

I guess I'm either coolant flushing, or finding a place to store it indoors over the cold months.
It got down to 2 degrees Celsius (35F) driving through the mountains when the sun went down on a trip I did earlier this year. Must have rode for half hour at that temp. Summer gloves and no heated grips, I thought I was going to get frostbite in my hands. They were aching pretty bad when I got to the motel and let them thaw.
