..and a little bit of poo came out my bottom.

went for a blast out yesterday with some mates, on it a bit on the twisties when sudden,y the rear brake locked up! the rear was squirming round but managed to keep it shiney side up.

I eventually came to a stop in the middle of the road, and how cars behind me didn’t slam me up the arse I’ll never know....
Rear wheel was stuck solid, so had to drag the bike to the side of the road. Rear disc glowing red, and caliper red got...so pissed on it. Waited for it to cool down and eventually freed. The ABS sensor wire was melted through the sheath, and the pads are bolloxed, so need to order new ones. They are all broken up with some chunks out of them. I never use the rear brake, unless on icy roads or steep hills, so the only conclusion I’ve come to is that part of the pad has got in between the disk and caliper and locked up or the brake was somehow stuck on ever so slightly..

Anyway, I’ll strip it down and order new pads etc...

@GPJake I use in the city much more than the front. Especially European cities are smaller and tighter streets - it helps to manouevr, U turn, gives better stability and no "drama" when the wheel is turned and I make something - minimizes me the fall chance. Anyway... as I can see, the rear brake is the real and shameful problem in the US : /
@Sin Please write even a separate mail to Ducati directly (in parallel to your local service). We have to be loud about it. Not to mention you managed the situation, bravo to you for keeping the cold blood (and warm poo).

Never use the rear apart from icy, wet, grave or on a hill... I trail using the front... never have on any of my bikes ( 30 odd years riding)

Not sat for long.... maybe a week?

didn’t warp the disk ( as far as I can tell)

not had the recall done, never knew there was one?? Either way, shouldn’t happen.

Was thinking more along the lines of if on the same day you rode the bike hard for a while, then took a break and the bike sat hot for a while, then rode it again when the failure occurred...

There’s a lot of heat that comes off that CAT, and if the bike sits when the CAT is hot, it can heat up the rear brake line that is very close to it... You may have already noticed that even the rear tire gets hot in closest proximity to the CAT, when sitting after a ride.

The recall replaces the rear brake line with one that is more resistant to heat, together with some slightly different fittings.

I just had a recall for my rear brake lines on my Supersport S. Wonder if that could have been the culprit for you.

@Rjl0428 Very glad you joined us!

If you haven’t already, you might browse the Recall section of our Forum, too, for more info in general about Recalls.

You might also, please, introduce yourself in the New Member section.

@Sin a similar thing happened to me. In my case I had recently adjusted the rear brake play incorrectly and which caused the brake to not release completely when it’s activated. After a while (like 50 miles) the drag eventually causes the caliper to freeze. Turns out it’s a common problem when you take out a bit too much play. You say you don’t use the rear brake so maybe not the same, none the less thought I’d mention it.

Same experience. Every time I tried to adjust the brake it would end up seizing after about 10 kilometres as it got hot. Ended up with a slightly warped disk (squeak, squeak as you pushed the bike around). The squeal would eventually go, until I tried to adjust the brake again.

When I had the rear brake work done (TSB not recall in Oz) I also got them to replace the rear disk (they has a replacement on eBay, going cheap, so I grabbed it months ago). They were careful to adjust the rear brakes. I now have a rear brake and haven't had overheating problems so I am a happy camper...

Just received a letter in the mail for rear brake recall. I have a 2019 supersport. Did you at any time before this happened, feel that your rear brake felt squishy?

Now that's the strangest thing. That happens a lot on the front when okes change the front brake lever. For that to happen there would have to be some force on the slave piston. Maybe you need to lubricate the floating slider on the caliper. Also add some white marine grease or lithium based grease to the plunger of the master at the foot lever. I think it might come from some corrosion on the moving parts.
