Weird sound when shifting

Hey guys,

So I was riding home today and experienced something strange. I was in 4th gear and went to shift into 5th using clutch, not the quickshifter. After I let off the clutch I realized I wasn't in gear, gave it some gas and it just revved. Ok false neutral, nothing new. Heres the thing, I pulled the clutch and shifted up again, this time I heard a pretty loud grinding sound (doing about 60 and I heard it fine over the wind) that lasted about a second . Still with the clutch in and now pretty worried I shifted down to 4th and let off, no problems.. shifted back up into 5th and no problems.. rode the 20 minutes to my house and didn't experience any other issues. That grinding sound really has me worried though, I've never heard it before and so far everything seems to be just fine but I'm pretty concerned. Any idea what it could be and is it something I should be worried about?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds like a partial shift. Gears didnt align complete. Is your clutch cable lose? It should have 4-5mm as per the book.
You might have been too light on the shifter...

If it's one time, "forgetaboutit"... nothing you can do, and most likely minimal wear. If repeatedly happens, then have it checked.
Wait, was it a grinding of the gears or some other grinding sound? Just checking...

It 'felt' like it was the gears but I'm not an expert. Hopefully it was a one time thing, I just have never experienced it before.
I had the same issue at least 3 times during my 5500km on my bike.
It is worrying indeed.
I am pretty sure it is a gear grinding.
I experienced it also. It's a gear that can't be locked correctly.
My ST3 gearbox had the same problem. It happened sometime. Don't worry, I had no problem with the gearbox.
Let's hope this isn't an issue for you guys. I've yet to experience this one...hope I never do! Keep us posted if it starts happening more often.
