I hope this is the right location.

I searched to see if anyone had a thread about gas milage going and found nothing.

My SSS gas milage is terrible compared to my Monster 821. I rode the **** out of the 821 and usually averaged around 40-42. 38 if i was really hard on it for a couple weeks.

With my new SSS i am getting maybe 32 and only since doing a 200 mile trip last weekend and just took it real slow. before it was 30. anyone else seeing really low numbers from their SSS. i get gas almost every time I leave just because I'm always at half a tank or less just form an afternoon ride for an hour the previous day.

Thank you! also seems in the thread quite a few people were comparing the monster and seeing similar responses to what i have noticed. I know my monster ran at 40-42 as it was my daily transportation and had no gas gauge only the warning light. Odd that the SSS would be so different with same rider style.

My hope is for others to post what they are seeing on the Dash Average Gas Milage setting so we can compare. I'd like to be sure there are no mechanical issues based off what Im seeing as well.

I am comparing to a brand new Monster 821 that has a fuel gauge and shows the consumption on the instruments. Both bikes have the same power output and share many parts. The consumption is very similar with the Monster using very slightly more (about 5%) as it only has 1000 kms on it at the moment.
We ride together and we fill the tanks together.

I found the fuel consumption improves as the bike is run in. My current tank is showing 5.3L / 100 kms (44.38 mpg US according to a calculator). Last decent run it was 4.97L / 100 kms (calculated from the odometer and fuel used) or about 47 mpg US. Most of my commute is through open country so I'd expect to get fairly good figures.

This question comes at a good time. I filled up on Wednesday and with the faffing around fitting the Termi I had let the fuel get really low. As I rolled into the filling station the range on the dash turned to 0 miles. The tank took 15.3 litres to fill up with the bike on the stand. As the tank capacity is quoted as 16 litres it was very close to empty
The distance from the last fill up was 165 miles. This equates to 10.78 miles/litre = 49.07 mpg Imp = 39.25 mpg US

So I now know the mpg the bike is getting and the range to empty. I usually fill up at around 140 miles.

i want to say what the dash says is typically 38 US MPG and my guess is about 38-40 because i think i have put about 44 US gallons in it since i got it 1800 miles ago. It is hard to tell because i have been refusing to actually take it to a gas station because i burn through more or less a tank to and from work. I have 2 5 gallon (20 liter) cans i keep refilling in the garage.

Depends on how you ride, where you ride and what ride mode you're in.

I just did the attached ride a few days ago. 202 miles, averaged 44.1 mpg. The bike indicates the average speed was 66.1 MPH. I was in Touring mode.

I haven't been out of Sport mode very much since I bought the bike.

Currently at 8,563km (roughly 5,300 miles).

I burn 6l / 100km.

I ride as fast as I can but next to Amos, Ed, se7en and jsbraslins, I probably dawdle along like a Bingo-playing Grandma.

Interesting numbers. I have 9000km and the dash shows average of 5.4l/100km. But I don't believe it. I get 210km on a tank, not the 300km the dash would equate to. Which compared to my tourer with a similar hp and a 1L larger tank is the same distance, demonstrating my average consumption on the dash is off. The good thing is that it is just so easy to wind it up where I live so perhaps my economy is less than other SS riders..

Amos, I think your data is properly vetted and my post is probably misleading.

The average consumption I posted does not reflect the average over 8,563km. I posted my total distance to indicate my engine's broken in but I should have clarified.

I was off the bike for a week and only 50km into this latest tank when I flipped on the instrument cluster last night to check. At the end of each tank, I think my average looks a lot more like yours - probably somewhere around 5.6l / 100km.

I should probably do a 1000km test with Trip 1 to get a more realistic average (instead of resetting Trip 1 to zero at every fuel up).

I use Trip 2 for my chain lube interval (1000km) since it's not liked to the average consumption feature and can't be used easily in that way.

Also, on a full tank the estimated range always reads 280km but I never make it that far before needing to fill up.

I agree with @psyopper, it depends on how you're riding. If you click on my signature Fuelly link, you can see my mileage graph. One on a particularly slow sightseeing tour, I got 51.8 MPG, then on the very next spirited run and subsequent full up, only 43.5 MPG. Both were done in touring. As for my daily commuting, I expect 45-47.

What I don't like is that my light comes on too early. If I fill up soon after I see the light, I usually put in less than 3 gals. The light is supposed to come on with about 1 gallon left, but mine seems like 1.5 gallons.

4.23 gallon (16 liter) tank, BTW.

I average about 49/50 mpg. which is a lot better than the previous MTS1200 which did about 42-45 mpg, but nowhere near as good as my old ST4s which averaged about 55 mpg and did a staggering 67 mpg on a European trip to WDW12 and back. Those are UK Imperial gallons.

So in the interest of science I took one for the team and ran a loop three times to see if there was any difference between the power modes and their fuel consumption.

To keep it simple I switched between touring, urban, and sport which I’ve left with default power mode, traction control, and ABS.

First run in touring mode, power mode medium. The 12.7 km loop took 11.5 minutes, averaged 66 kmh, and average fuel consumption was 5.2 L/100KM.

Next was urban mode, power mode low. The bike felt sluggish and seemed to vibrate more. It needed a fair twist of the grip. I actually didn’t enjoy it much and if I test rode the bike in that setup I probably wouldn’t have bought it. 12 minutes, average 64 kmh and 4.8 L/ 100KM.

Then sport mode, full power. The throttle response was markedly better, and it didn’t take much of a twist to get things happening. 11 minutes, average 69 kmh and 5.4 L/100KM.

Scientific? Hardly. And I had way too much fun in sport mode.

I was, however, suprised that there was a marked difference in fuel consumption in urban/ low power mode. It felt as if I had to ride it hard to get anywhere. Will I use low power mode? Not on your nelly...

I’ll also add the loop had no traffic lights and was in an anticlockwise direction so I didn’t have to give way to traffic making a turn (we drive and ride on the left). About half was rural/urban where I stuck pretty much to the speed limit. There was a section through a township where I stuck to the speed limit and another township with a community event and low speed limits (ANZAC day here in Oz), also adhered to. The rest was tight twisties and small straights.

It would also be interesting to try this in open country, where the throttle was open longer and higherrevs sustained for longer periods. <sigh\> maybe it does need a dyno test for a definitive answer.
